Wounded Knee

Indian Country
The site of the December 29, 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre can be seen here as well the mass grave burial site of the victims of Chief Bigfoot's band at the top of the hill.  The ruins of the fireplace is what remains of the old Gildersleeves trading post and museum.  It burned down near the end of the occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973 by the American Indian Movement who took possession of the town and Wounded Knee grounds for 71 days during a hostile stand-off with the United States Government.
